Tribal Dragon Tattoos and Locations
Tribal dragon tattoos are among the most popular
at present. They offer the best of two worlds: The designs are bold and easily-recognizable and they require
little color or shading work and are, thus, inexpensive, in most cases. One should choose their dragon with the
location of the tattoo in mind. Some of these devices look better on a wide patch of skin and others look better
with some motion and wrapping added to the artwork. One’s choice in location will largely dictate which one of
these tattoos will make the most sensible choice.
Tribal dragon tattoos which are very large and as
wide as they are long are best-suited to areas of the body such as the back and the upper arms on men. These
sort of tattoos need room to breathe and, to bring out the true beauty of their lines and shapes, they are best
placed on areas where they won’t wrap or bend around any part of the body. In general, the dragons from classic
European myths tend to fit this bill as they were generally depicted as wide-bodied creatures with broad wings
and large heads. The only portions of these dragons that were generally longer than they were wide were the
necks.
Oriental dragons are another story altogether where tribal dragon tattoos are
concerned. These dragons were oftentimes nearly of the proportion of serpents, having a long body with little
girth. These are excellent choices for wrapping tattoos. One can easily have one of these tattoos designed as
an armband without compromising the aesthetics. In fact, this will sometimes bring out the aesthetic elements
of the tattoo a bit more and make it more striking. Because these dragons were typically depicted with small
wings or even with no wings at all, they tend to be characterized by smooth, flowing lines.
Tribal dragon tattoos need not necessarily be a
stand-alone piece or be black in color. Oftentimes, they look excellent in another color or wrapping around
another piece of art. These mythical creatures were often used as parts of crests in both the Orient and
in Europe and they still look great in that capacity today. Many Oriental designs feature kanji
writing and other elements surrounded by a dragon which adds a very powerful, mystical quality to the tattoo and
which can add something truly unique to one’s body.
Tribal dragon tattoos can feature stylized
versions of very famous dragons. Whether they be from modern tales, such as the many fantasy novels which have
remained ever popular or the characters from ancient myths, this adds something different to the tattoo. Even
dragon-like creatures are good choices. Examples include Midgard, the serpent that circled the world in Viking
mythology, Hydra, the many-headed Greek serpent or Tiamat, the Babylonian dragon who was the adversary of
Marduk. Showing off one’s cultural knowledge with their tattoo art makes it something more than a piece of art
and can lead to some very interesting conversations as a result!
